I like my pancakes cut in swirls
Morrocan moles and undercover squirrels
I like cartoons, southern cities with large moons
Faith healers, ex-female drug dealers and art booms
Apologise for my weird mix
What taste like hot dogs and tear drips
And looks like pantomime and clear bricks
And smells like shotguns and deer piss.” — Lupe Fiasco

FFor those that’s not in the know, that’s a Lupe line from the song Mural. A song I really don’t understand in terms of his abstract lyrics. But one of many parts that sticks out to me was him describing his weird mix of interests. Even for me Lupe is a weird dude, and in the sense there’s a combination of things that don’t seem to go together. Better put, he’s unorthodox. Now I wouldn’t call myself weird or unorthodox cause I’m pretty simple with mines I think. At the same time, I do have my odd mix of things that people would be surprised I’m interested in.

Coming where I’m from you’re either in school, working a job or hustling, play ball or make music. Of course there’s other things that exist beyond that, but you’ll find someone like myself and plenty others with one or more of these in their background.

To begin with my list, I consider myself into computers but not so much that I could break one down and rebuild it. I just appreciate the things they allow people to do. I had my first one in 2000 and been using them ever since. It was on my first computer that I started rapping. Outside of computers, there’s video games of course. But not just any video games. I’m talking about strategy games like Command & Conquer, which is also a computer game. Fighting games like Dragon Ball FighterZ (come get slapped up psn: shunslab) and adventure type games such of Pokémon. Yeah I said it, gotdamn Pokémon! It’s one of those long form games I like. I can recall being back in rehab (2009) for a spinal injury and during those sleepless nights, I’d be on my DS leveling up.

Every since the injury I’ve taken up a rather large interest in movies, like science-fiction (i.e. dystopian) and TV shows like Black Mirror and Person of Interest, which feeds my political and ‘technological advancement’ appetite, but not just for simple entertainment. I consider it a part of my writing process and learning how to tell great stories to improve my storytelling ambitions. I even watch a bit of anime these days. The most recent being Ghost In The Shell. But I grew up heavy on cartoons like TMNT and action-fighting shows such as Power Rangers (the OGs). I use to rush home from grade school to make sure I caught the 3:30 airing of it. I was glued to the tube with my bowl of Cheerios.

In addition to that, I found myself getting into meditation, herbs and the occult with much of my influence being from Brother Panic and Ms. Blue. After all, when you experience a life changing situation, it alters you and into certain areas for obvious reasons.

One last interest of mine I’ll speak on is what people would call living off the grid. It’s just one of the many things I find incredible because it transform the way we’re use to living. One of these days I know I’ll get there because I don’t plan on being apart of the rat race. I rather live on my own terms. But don’t think I’m trying to go full Amish though. All jokes aside, these are just a handful of things I can think of off the top of my head and when I hear that Mural song and line, I think of these things.
