Still in the wake of Nipsey’s transition I’m reminded of a song Nas did off the NIGGER (Untitled) album. Called Untitled, Nas describes himself like a revolutionary who envisions a scenario of his untimely demise. He’s arguably one of the best storytellers in Hip-Hop.
Oh, it’s a matter of days before they try to take me/I heard gun shots rang; his bullet’s got my name/I ain’t see ’em take aim, I dreamt this day came/’Cause I stood in the face of damnation/Satan spat at ’em, flat out disgraced ’em/He want my blood, why me?/Why not the fake who deserve death man?/Fuck it, I’ll take one/’Can stop me but can’t stop a whole nation of millions who feel you deceived them/They believe in reparation makes it even/So I’m deadly now because of one reason, they listening
To hear it play out and in today’s setting is eery because I’ve listened to various shows with people talking all types of stuff about Nipsey and what went down among other things. But one thing I am learning more of is he was definitely a force that people felt for multiple reasons.
So when I got up this morning, my mind started thinking about some Nas lyrics from the N.I.G.G.E.R song where he talks about keeping a small circle cause the close ones can hurt you, but then that led me to this joint, which I feel was no coincidence. And I played it and couldn’t help but think about the brother as Nas was spitting all throughout it.
You won’t remember why they came to clip me/When time go by you’ll soon forget me/They say he was the king of bling, jewels, and Bentley’s/Then a use one of my lines just to prove I’m guilty/Don’t let’ em kill me…
No conspiracy, no funny business but just thinking out loud about how things actually went down and how there’s some overlap between Nipsey and this song. It’s almost like Nas was ahead of his time with this song, or he was just drawing from familiar patterns. Either way, I had to make it Song Of The Day. And I highly recommend running this album back if you haven’t listened to it cause Nas was on to something with this one.
